WHAT IS A PERCENT SOLUTION?

Some refractometers require a calibration fluid other than distilled water. In particular the Brix 28 - 62%, Brix 45 - 82%, and Brix 58 - 90% refractometers require a calibration fluid containing a known amount of sugar. The 28%, 45%, and 58%, refer to concentrations of sugar in a solution measured by WEIGHT. A very simple method of making your own calibration solution would be to measure out your sugar, i.e. 28 grams, and then add 72 grams (72 cc) of distilled water to give you 100 grams of 28% sugar solution. Be sure to stir the solution to completely dissolve the sugar before you use it for calibration. If you do your measurements with care this will be close enough for common work.
